A Sustainable ISDE 2024 for all

The FIM, aware of the event’s impact, has developed mandatory environmental protection regulations described in the FIM Environmental Code 2024. The International Sustainability Commission has developed guidelines to organise high-impact events based on mitigation measures to protect natural resources and support the SDGs’ achievement. The FIM has a highly trained technical team to carry out sound measurements so that participating motorcycles do not exceed the limits allowed by technical and environmental regulations.

In addition, each event sanctioned by the FIM is attended by a Sustainability Steward, trained by expert instructors accredited by the FIM Academy, who has passed a rigorous selection and evaluation system, and who must have an international sustainability steward license. This year, the International Sustainability Commission has also nominated a member as CID Delegate who will be the link with the Enduro commission. Moreover, the team will be joined by a national expert in charge of the area.

Sound level control and noise pollution prevention

FIM motorcycle sound measurement specialists perform technical inspections on all participant’s motorcycles, including decibel measurements, using advanced equipment and measurement methods. If applicable, the event counts on an experienced Sound Control Officer (SCO) and/or an acoustic engineer. Additionally, exhaust pipes and silencers must fulfil all the requirements concerning sound control (art 1.79 AND 1.31 Enduro technical rules).

The sound system in the paddock and in the sensitive areas is also regulated and adjusted to minimise the sound level impact.

The aim is to minimise the sound level from the operation of competition, support, and organisation vehicles, following monitoring to detect if allowable limits are exceeded and to prevent damage to human health and/or local wildlife.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was conducted by a national licensed biologist registered in the National Register of Biologists in Galicia. The EIA is a document that aims to identify, predict, assess, and mitigate potential environmental impacts that a project or activity may cause in the short, medium, and long term. It is a technical-administrative preventive procedure. It is available at the event’s secretary upon request.

Protection of Biodiversity

This competition will take place in various locations throughout Galicia, some of which have been classified as Red Natura 2000 Galicia. However, the paddock will remain the same throughout all days, and it will be held at Silleda fair compounds, which makes it an ideal location for this activity. The facilities available at the paddock include race control, security, press room, water facilities, electricity, parking and medical services amongst other

A series of measures to satisfy the competition has been proposed to the organisers and experts in the selection of the routes, plus a special plan of measures to adapt the competition to the regulations for natura 2000 network areas.

In general, in the sections of the Natura 2000 Network, special measures are designed to minimise: –

  1. Acoustic disturbances (sound level control by sections and general).
  2. Disturbances against erosion (reduction of speed and delimitation of zones).
  3. Avoid crowds of spectators.
  4. Parking outside areas enabled for vehicles, – or support equipment, – coordination or services.

More information can be found in the Environmental Impact Assessment available with the event’s sustainability delegates.

Measures to protect the ground and biodiversity

Protecting biodiversity is of utmost importance to the organisation. A plan to protect the fauna and flora of the study area should be implemented, focusing on the areas where the start, finish, and service areas are located.

The event has a special plan of measures to reduce the nuisance and impacts in transit and congregation areas, some in Natura 2000 Network environments. With this plan, the organisation intends to develop a set of specific and reinforcement actions to minimise potential environmental effects, which are in addition to those already planned for the whole event and those already established by the FIM for this type of Enduro. The aim is to prevent impacts on those sections that run in the surroundings of the Natura 2000 Network.

The main measure, and on which the rest of the actions that make up this plan are articulated, is the exclusion of the paths and trails present within the Natura 2000 Network in timed and/or other competitive sections. As well as the selective collection of organic matter and the treatment of wastewater that may be produced by the caravans and in the paddock, which will be taken to an area of the fairgrounds with an internal treatment system.

The organisation is committed to restoring altered soils resulting from different activities carried out during the event’s development. For the prevention of spills of oils, fats, and other polluting substances, the staff working with hazardous materials has been instructed to act in case of accidents that may cause pollution.

All participants must use an environmental mat regulated under the specifications of the FIM Environment Code both in the Parc Fermé and in all controls and refuelling areas. (Specific conditions apply in each event and are described in the supplementary regulations)

Motorcycle washing areas must also have adequate drainage and surfaces. (FIM Environmental Code).

Respect for Flora and Fauna

Actions:

Preserve the existing flora in areas directly and indirectly affected by the project.

Plant species extraction and cutting are prohibited in direct and indirect areas.

It is not allowed to burn cleared vegetation, waste, or any other materials that can easily catch fire in an open space.

It is strictly forbidden to collect and/or extract wildlife. Any such activity is prohibited.

Strict control of the waste generated.

The event’s waste management will be coordinated with the local Municipalities. Dedicated personnel and equipment have been prepared to carry out the task.

Paddock Rules ISDE

1/ It is strictly forbidden to dump your waste waters on the ground.. Teams are invited to empty them at the right spots announced by the organisation

Raise awareness of the participants about responsible behaviour.

All participants in FIM competition are called to respect and comply with current regulations.

In the tests and paddock, an audio message produced by the National Federation will be delivered regularly by the speaker at the spectators’ destinations for security and respect for nature and the environment.

Paper consumption reduction.

All results and regulations will be managed through a special mobile application, significantly reducing paper consumption.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)

The event has been aligned with the SDG´s

Climate:
Measures to reduce the GHG will be put in place and all unavoidable emissions (Scope 1) will be calculated using the FIM CO2 calculator and other means and offset by the organisation planting native species during the correct time of planting. The FIM is working with the

Inclusion:
This is an event that is also designed for the participation of women. Also, some areas in the paddock and particular test have access for people with restricted mobility and special parking. Dedicated services for people with limited mobility. This is a worldwide event.

Promotion of local culture:
The opening ceremony will be held in “Plaza Obradoiro”.  This is a site of worldwide importance with a worthy significance specially for the pilgrims that finalise the “Camino de Santiago” in this place.

Economical impact:
The International Six Days of Enduro 2024 will have a direct economic impact of close to 6 million euros, as a result of the activity of the more than 500 athletes, 3,000 members of the organisation and auxiliary teams of the machines that will compete in Galicia between 14 to 19 October. The average occupancy per competitor is 12 days, which will mean an almost full house of hotel establishments and rural tourism in the central area of Galicia. Despite the time of year, in which there is usually a substantial drop in hotel occupancy, during the days of competition a great rise is expected in Santiago de Compostela with the arrival of the members of the organisation, media and spectators. In addition to the capital, occupancy in the central area of Galicia is full, especially in the municipalities where it is held, where there are practically no places available, and you need accommodation in other nearby municipalities, having to go from Melide to Rodeiro, passing through establishments in the Rías Baixas.

Cultural impact:
To open the ISDE at the Plaza del Obradoiro in Santiago de Compostela will have a profound positive and cultural impact, not only for the city but for Galicia and Spain as a whole. This iconic site, known as the final destination of the Camino de Santiago and one of Europe’s most important cultural heritage centres, is much more than just a physical space. It symbolises history, spirituality, and unity among peoples.

Such an event will attract visitors from worldwide, boosting tourism in Santiago and its surroundings. The global media exposure will increase interest in the Camino de Santiago and Galician culture, benefiting sectors like hospitality, commerce, and services.”
